Description
Leason House is a house built in 1711, with alterations made in the late 18th century and restored around 1990. It is constructed of red brick, partly rendered, and features a pantile roof with raised, tumbled gables and a single gable stack. The house has two storeys plus a garret. The street-facing side has a doorway on the right with a six-panel door and a tripartite overlight in a moulded wooden surround. To the left is a 20th-century tripartite glazing bar sash window. Above this, there is a late 18th-century bow window with a tripartite glazing bar sash.
Inside, the house retains many original features, including a staircase with square newels and turned balusters with knops, along with a moulded handrail. The top flight leading to the garret has plain square balusters. The ground floor front room features plaster coving and two cupboards with original panel doors. The upper floor rooms also have cupboards with panel doors. Most of the doors throughout the house are six-panel with moulded surrounds. Original beams and floorboards are still present, and the roof retains its original collar beam and purlins.
In the late 18th century, this house was converted, along with the adjoining Pritchett House, into a shop with upper floor showrooms. Around 1900, it was converted into an Institute.
