Description
The Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1806 and raised in 1925, designed by John Matson of Bridlington for Trinity House. It is constructed of rendered brick with stone dressings and features cast and wrought iron elements. The conical tower stands about 27 metres high from the ground to the balcony. It has a high chamfered plinth and casement windows with stone surrounds, topped with low pediments over the lintels. A deep moulded cornice is located below the cast-iron balcony, which is adorned with moulded newels and mushroom finials. At the top, there is a lantern store with a weather-vane above.
Inside, the lighthouse contains a basement oil store with a brick dome, and a spiral stone stair with slender square-section balusters that support a wrought-iron handrail. A central cast-iron tube rises through the full height of the lighthouse, designed for driving-weights. The lamp is supported on six cast-iron pillars that hold pointed arches with decoratively pierced spandrels.
