Description
The Old Lighthouse, a former lighthouse built in 1674, is constructed of coursed chalk rubble with stone dressings, with later repairs made in red and light brown brick. The structure features an octagonal tower divided into four stages, topped with a brick parapet that has moulded string-courses. There is a boarded door set in a pointed red brick surround, and a blocked door in a pointed yellow brick on the landward side. The upper three stages on the seaward-facing cardinal sides have rectangular windows with stone surrounds that include plain chamfers on the reveals, sills, and lintels. The low roof is situated behind the parapet. Inside, there are 20th-century wooden stairs and floors. This lighthouse was established as a business venture by Sir John Clayton but was never used.
