Description
The War Memorial in Flamborough was established in 1918 and later updated in 1945. It features a plain stone cross set on a double plinth within a memorial garden that is part of a scheduled ancient monument. The lowest step of the plinth has the inscription:
1914 - 1918 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE
The middle step lists the names of 12 servicemen, with an additional 15 names inscribed on the sides. The upper step has a projecting stone that reads: 1939-1945, along with the names of 3 servicemen, totaling 16 names from the Second World War.
At the base of the cross shaft, there is an inscription that states:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE SONS OF FLAMBOROUGH WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WARS
The "S" in "WARS" was added after the Second World War. The memorial was originally unveiled in October 1921.
