Description

Nos 19 and 21 on Ladygate are a pair of buildings dating from around 1830, which feature a refronting of a long timber-framed structure that originated in the 16th or 17th century. The front elevation is two storeys high and constructed of painted brick. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with pantiles, featuring overhanging eaves.

At No 19, there are two windows with flush framed architraves and hung sashes that have glazing bars, although they are of different dates. The entrance has a panelled doorcase with a frieze and cornice hood, leading to a door made up of six fielded panels. Adjacent to this is a passageway with full-height doors. Inside, two bays of the crown post rafter double roof are visible, with posts on a tie beam supporting a collar purlin that is braced. This roof structure appears to be intact despite the 19th-century alterations.

The south end of the building, No 21, is also finished in painted brick and features one window on both floors, with flush architrave frames and glazing bars on the first floor. There is a narrow 19th-century doorway with a segmental head, similar to the ground floor window, which includes a rectangular fanlight and a half-glazed door.
