Description

Buckton Hall is a country house built in 1744 for John Robinson. It is constructed of chalk ashlar with stone dressings, featuring a brick parapet and a concrete roof. The building has a square plan and a symmetrical elevation with three storeys and a basement, comprising five bays arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. The central bay projects forward and is topped with a pediment.

The exterior includes a moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. Stone steps lead up to the main entrance, which is a 20th-century panelled door set within a Gibbs surround, complete with a fanned key block and a pulvinated frieze beneath a segmental pediment. The ground floor windows also have a Gibbs surround with a pulvinated frieze and fanned keystone block, all under a dentilled cornice. There are bands separating the first and second floors, where the windows feature simpler moulded architraves, with the first floor having a plain key block. The first floor window in the central bay has a pulvinated frieze and a dentilled pediment, while the window above it has a moulded and shouldered architrave. All windows are fitted with bracketed sills and contain 20th-century sashes with glazing bars.

The house is topped with a deep moulded cornice that includes a pulvinated frieze, dentils, and modillions. A pilastered brick parapet with moulded stone coping conceals the flat roof. The interior was gutted by fire in 1919, and the side and garden elevations were subsequently remodelled. Inside, there are two re-used richly ornamented doorcases and an overmantel dated 1892. The large cellars are brick vaulted and rest on chalk footings.
