Description
The Bempton War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Grade II*-listed church of St Michael. It consists of a 5-meter tall stone cross. The cross-head features a central rose on both the front and rear, while the arms display various decorative motifs. This cross is mounted on an octagonal shaft that rises from a pedimented square plinth, which is set on a simple square base.
The front (south) face of the plinth has the inscription: "IN GRATITUDE TO THE MEN OF BEMPTON AND BUCKTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 (10 NAMES) GOD AND THEIR COUNTRY CALLED THEM BUT THEIR NAMES SHALL LIVE." The east face of the plinth is inscribed with "1939 – 1945 (2 NAMES) KOREAN CONFLICT 1950 – 1953 (1 NAME) (3 NAMES)."
