Description
The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building located in Bempton. It features an early 13th-century nave arcade, a 14th-century west tower, a chancel built in 1829, and a 19th-century south porch. The church underwent significant restorations in 1870 and 1906. It is constructed of ashlar with a brick chancel that is partly pebble dashed, and it has slate roofs.
The church consists of a 2-bay chancel, a 4-bay aisled nave, a south porch, and a west tower. The south wall of the chancel has two windows with three round-headed lights under square heads, with a round-headed south door in between, featuring a datestone from 1829 above it. The north wall has a plain three-light square-headed window with mullions. The east window is a five-light design with three round-headed lights above, set under a pointed arch with a hood-mould. The nave windows have 19th-century cusped tracery, while the south clerestory includes circular windows with cusped cross-tracery, and the north side has two-light windows under flat heads.
The west tower has two plain lower stages and an octagonal belfry stage, separated by stringcourses. The belfry features two-light openings with curvilinear tracery beneath a battlemented parapet. The west window comprises two trefoil-headed lights with a quatrefoil above.
Inside, there is a timber chancel screen dating from around 1829, supported by four square-section fluted columns that carry elliptical arches with keyblocks. The panelling above incorporates the Royal Arms. The nave arcade consists of double-chamfered round arches on alternating round and octagonal piers, with round and octagonal abaci. The church also houses an early 13th-century goblet-shaped font adorned with stiff-leaf ornamentation at the base, and it contains two bells, one dating from around 1361.
