Description
The Church of St Leonard is a Grade II* listed building located in Reighton, dating back to the early 12th century, with restorations carried out in 1905, 1911, and 1976. It is constructed of squared sandstone on a plinth, topped with a pantile roof. The church features a nave and chancel, along with a west tower. The tower is three stages high, stepped, and topped with a swept, pyramidal roof. Each face of the upper stage has round-headed bell openings. There is a 20th-century door in a flat-topped opening on the south wall, accompanied by a variety of windows in enlarged openings to the right. A rudimentary mass clock is scratched into the quoins to the right of the central window. The tower is flanked by 19th-century lancets, with no openings on the north and east sides.
Inside, the church boasts an early 12th-century chancel arch with quoined jambs and chamfered abaci. There are two trefoil-headed piscinae in the north chancel wall. To the right of the sanctuary, there is a statue niche with a carved bracketed base and part of a carved canopy, as well as a square projecting alms box. Portions of Anglo-Danish carving are incorporated into the masonry at the west end of the north wall, and the church also features a Norman tub font.
