Description

The Church of Saint Peter is a Grade II* listed church, rebuilt between 1897 and 1905 by Brodrick, Lowther, and Walker, while incorporating a 12th-century arcade and chancel. It is constructed of rock-faced sandstone and features a roof that is part-tile and part-slate. The church has a three-bay nave, a north aisle, a south porch, a chancel, and a west tower. The two-stage tower is topped with a coped parapet and diagonal buttresses, and it has two-light pointed bell openings beneath pointed arches in the upper stage. The 19th-century porch has a round-arched opening. Surviving 12th-century lancet windows are located in the east end and in the east end of the north aisle, while the remaining windows are 19th-century, with round-headed windows on the south side and paired lancets on the north side.

Inside, the church features a late 12th-century arcade with round arches of two chamfered orders on cylindrical piers that have round abaci, nailhead moulding, and spurs on the bases. The early 12th-century chancel arch consists of three orders on clustered columns with steep bases and scalloped capitals. Both the north and south doors have 12th-century jambs up to the impost level. The tower space has a cobbled floor and contains a magnificent Norman square font, which has angle columns, cable moulding around the rim, and each face is carved with a different pattern.
