Description
Head Gardener's Cottage is located approximately 54 metres to the west of Burton Constable Hall. This house dates from around 1770 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a range to the left that is of no special interest. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in English garden wall bond, featuring red brick and ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high, with the main facade facing the gable end. The entrance, now located on the side, consists of a six-panel door.
The main facade includes an ashlar plinth and an arcade of three recessed round arches that reach three-quarters of the way up the wall, with red brick heads and ashlar imposts. The recesses are now cement rendered, with inserted casement windows in each of the outer arches. The pedimented gable features a dentilled cornice that continues around the sides as an eaves band, along with a semicircular recess that is now rendered with a red brick head. The building has ashlar copings and ridge stacks. It was built as a pair with Garden Cottage and is included for its group value.
