Description
Wood Hall is a house built in 1820 for the Maister family, with some minor later additions and alterations. It is constructed of grey brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has an asymmetrical plan and consists of two storeys with a three-storey tower. The façade features three bays, with the right bay projecting forward and topped with a pediment, while the left bay is recessed and includes a cylindrical tower with a single-storey porch set at an angle.
The entrance to the porch has steps leading up to a double, part-glazed door with a fanlight, all framed by a moulded architrave and hoodmould. The building has a plinth, a cornice, and a low parapet with a blocking course. The windows are 12-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors, with curved sashes in the turret. All windows have ashlar sills and flat arches made of gauged brick, with the ground floor window in the right bay featuring a hood supported by consoles. A three-course band runs along the second floor of the tower, which has an oculus above the porch. The eaves are overhanging and supported by paired modillions, and there are side stacks and hipped roofs.
On the garden front, there are three openings on the first floor, including a large canted bay that reaches full height. The ground floor features tall 12-pane sashes under flat arches, with fluted consoles supporting hoods on either side of the bay and one to the left. The first floor also has 12-pane sashes under flat brick arches, all with ashlar sills. The outer sides of the canted bay have blind windows.
Inside, the house retains original features such as marble fireplaces, six-fielded-panel doors (some curved in section) within moulded architraves, cornices, shutters, and an open-well staircase with a wrought-iron strapwork balustrade and a wreathed handrail. The dining room includes a two-columnar Ionic colonnade. Family papers indicate the involvement of a London architect in the design of the house.
