Description
The Church of the Most Holy Sacrament is a church built between 1788 and 1789, with later additions and alterations, including a mid-19th century extension to the east and a 20th century porch to the west. It was designed by Thomas Atkinson for William Constable. The church is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in English garden wall bond and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a single tall storey and consists of three bays, with a single-bay extension to the east and a porch to the west. The entrance is a double plank door located on the south side of the porch, set under a round arch. Inside, at the west end of the church, there is a six-fielded-panel door. The west end has a 16-pane sash window to the right of the door and a 16-pane window with radial glazing in the gable. The south side features three round-arched windows; the two westernmost are 16-pane windows with radial glazing, while the eastern window is a stained-glass window dated 1946, all under header arches. Brick copings adorn all gables.
Inside, the west end has a gallery supported by four Doric columns. The north side contains an arcade of blank round-arched recesses with raised imposts, and a similar arcade on the south side contains windows. The interior is finished with a moulded cornice and a segmental vault. There is a shallow chancel bay featuring wall paintings. A neoclassical marble wall monument, depicting a female figure and urn, commemorates Mary Chichester, who died in 1815, and was created by Tyley of Bristol. Remnants of box pews can be found at the west end. An inscribed brass plaque at the entrance reads: "DEO IMMORTALI / AEDES HAS SACRAS / EREXIT / GULIEMUS CONSTABLE / A.D. / DMDCCLXXXIX." The church abuts a former prebendary to the north.
