Description
Tower House is a former engine house and water tower of Burton Constable Hall, now converted into a dwelling. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and incorporates an early 17th-century tower, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring yellow brick and ashlar dressings, along with reddish-brown narrow brick in stretcher bond on the tower, and has concealed roofs.
The structure is square in plan with a three-bay front, and the 17th-century tower is located at the rear. The main front has a central section that projects forward, consisting of three storeys and a single bay, flanked by two-storey, single bays on either side. The building features yellow brick quoins and a chamfered plinth. The central entrance is a brick basket-arched opening with a part-glazed door, and above it is a heraldic shield inscribed 'SANS MAL DESIR'.
The windows throughout are casement cross types with wooden mullions and transoms, except for the second floor of the tower, which has a four-pane casement. All windows are set under ashlar hoodmoulds with label stops and have ashlar sills. There is a yellow brick eaves course and projecting embattled parapets. The rear features an embattled octagonal stack, and to the right, there is an octagonal water tower with inserted three-pane windows under hoodmoulds, which was lowered in the late 20th century. The building is noted in Pevsner's guide to Yorkshire, York and The East Riding, published in 1978.
