Description
No. 51 Market Place is a bank building constructed in 1856 by Cuthbert Brodrick. It is built of ashlar and brick, topped with a slate roof, and showcases a Classical style. The building has two storeys and three bays, with a stepped plinth. There are three steps leading to a panelled door on the right, which is set beneath a round arch featuring transverse fluting on the reveals. The building has moulded capitals, and the soffit of the arch is adorned with transverse fluting and a roundel. The remaining bays also have similar arches, both fitted with 20th-century glazing. Each bay is separated by pilasters that display transverse fluting.
On the first floor, a moulded string course projects at the ends, ending in foliated finials. The first-floor windows are round-headed, featuring continuous roll-mouldings and 12-pane sash windows. The eaves are finished with a full entablature that includes a shallow moulded architrave, a frieze decorated with rosettes, and a dentilled cornice with additional rosettes at the cymatium. The roof is hipped, with a stack at one end.
