Description
Gardener's Cottage, built around 1760, is located approximately 25 metres southeast of Burton Constable Hall. It is likely designed by Thomas Lightoller for William Constable. The cottage is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in English garden wall bond and features a pantile roof.
The building has a two-storey central section with two first-floor windows, flanked by single-storey, single-bay ranges on either side. The central range slightly projects forward and is gabled. At its centre, there is a round-arched recess that extends through one and a half storeys, containing an entrance with a board door situated between four-pane sash windows, all beneath an elliptical arch. The side ranges also have similar sash windows under segmental arches.
A two-course band runs across the full width of the first floor, and there is a blocked lunette window within the recess. The spandrels feature four-pane sashes under segmental arches, and the centre has a two-course eaves band. The gable is topped with brick copings, and there is a side stack. The side ranges have lean-to roofs. At the time of the last survey, the cottage was disused and in a somewhat dilapidated condition.
