Description
This is a late Georgian (post 1826) cast iron lamp standard located in the grass verge next to the gable of 2 St Mary's Terrace in Beverley. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, which symbolizes a disused weapon of war. Rising from a narrow collar is a section that resembles Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
