Description
Nos 52, 53, and 54 on Saturday Market are shops and offices built in the mid to late 19th century, with some later alterations. The buildings are made of rendered brick with painted stone dressings and have a slate roof. The ground floor features 20th-century shop fronts, with a passage to the rear located between Nos 52 and 53.
On the first floor, there is a sill band supporting three square bay windows, each with four-pane sashes set in moulded surrounds that include entablatures and blocking courses. The central window is topped with an elaborately decorated cornice, and there are recessed panels on either side of it, flanked by Ionic pilasters. The corners of the facade also have similar paired pilasters. A continuous moulded entablature-like band runs across the full width of the facade, interrupted by the windows, with dosserets above the pilasters.
The second floor features paired Corinthian pilasters at the corners and a deep plinth-like band. It has three four-pane sashes in surrounds with engaged Corinthian columns, entablatures, and moulded pediments, with the central window featuring a decorated segmental pediment. Above this, there is an entablature with a dentilled cornice, dosserets over the paired pilasters, and a blocking course. The side walls have brick stacks. This listing is included for its group value only.
