Description
The Grapes is a mid-18th century public house located at 27 Saturday Market in Beverley. It is a two-storey building with an attic, constructed from painted brick.
The west front features five sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor. The ground floor has a simple 19th-century shop front with plate glass, including one window with panelled shutters and a bow shop window that retains its original glazing. This section has a reeded cill and a cornice decorated with balls. The base is made of panelled stone, and side panels are designed to accommodate the shutters when they are open. A stone string course runs along the first floor, and the building has rusticated quoins and a bold moulded wood eaves cornice. The roof is covered with pantiles and includes three gabled dormers.
On the south front, the first floor has four windows, while the ground floor features a doorway with a stone architrave and two richly carved double console brackets. The late 18th-century shop front has a modillion cornice and one window, along with a pair of broad doors. Inside, there is a staircase with a closed string, plain newels, and a handrail, but no balusters except for the top two flights, which have mid-18th-century turned balusters.
The Grapes has a 19th-century public house interior that includes a bar with semi-vase shaped studs and fielded panelling. It occupies a prominent corner in the square and is home to Messrs Mills, Wine Merchants, who have been established in these premises for a long time.
