Description
The Former Corn Exchange is a building dated 1886, constructed from brick and terracotta, with some areas painted. It features a gabled central portion adorned with scrolls above the aisles and an iron weathervane. The gable includes swags around a coat of arms and a date label. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a glazed clerestory. There is a large blocked semi-circular window with a keystone above two round-headed entrances that have iron gates, flanked by channelled pilasters with grooved cornices and rosettes. Each aisle has a blocked pedimented window, and the outer walls are supported by rusticated pilasters topped with ball finials. The building was used as a cinema for a period and was constructed on the site of the Butchers Shambles, which dates back to 1753 and was associated with Samuel Smith, featuring carving by Jeremiah Hargrave.
