Description
The structure consists of gates, gatepiers, flanking walls, and abutments, built around 1660-1670, likely designed by Robert Hooke. The gateway features wrought iron gates with spikes on the lower and middle rails and ringed spikes on the top rail. The gates are equipped with a pivoted latch and bolted-on gudgeon-and-pintle hinges. The gatepiers have moulded bases and sunk panels on all faces, with a volute on the gate side. They originally had deep dentilled cornices topped with ball finials, which have since fallen. The flanking walls include a moulded plinth and coping that ramps up to the piers under the volutes. The abutments also have moulded bases, sunk panels on their faces, and a shallow cornice, with ball finials that are now missing. This gateway leads to the former Londesborough Hall from Londesborough Avenue. Londesborough Park is listed in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
