Description
Cemetery Lodge, built around 1880, was designed by architect Alfred Smith of Nottingham. This two-storey building features a steep fish scale slate roof with hexagonal paired and triple chimneys, along with iron finials at the gable ends. The exterior showcases polychrome Gothic style, with stone dressings around the windows and decorative brickwork in yellow, red, and vitrified bands, including some chequer work.
The porch, located at the angle of the building, has a columned doorway with foliated capitals and a hipped roof topped with an iron finial. The gable facing the road includes one blocked window beneath a drip mould and a three-light window, where the two outer lights are taller and round-arched, set under gablets with foliated capitals on the mullions. The ground floor features a three-light window, with the centre light taller and also under a gable, displaying similar carved mullions.
On the left-hand wing, there is a two-light window set in a reveal with a carved surround, and a two-light window on the ground floor. The entrance door is fitted with iron hinges, and the building stands on a plinth. Cemetery Lodge, along with the cemetery chapels and the wall surrounding the cemetery, forms a cohesive group.
