Description

The Parish Church of St Mary was founded around 1113 by William de Gant for the canons of the Order of St Augustine. Only the nave and parts of the towers remain from the original stone Priory Church, which is mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries. The church was restored by Gilbert Scott, with the towers completed between 1846 and 1879. The Parish Church of St Mary is part of a group that includes Nos 20 to 22 Church Green, Nos 15 to 18 Church Green, The Bayle Gate on Baylegate, Nos 11 to 16 Baylegate, and Nos 4 to 8 Kirkgate, as well as Nos 15 to 20 Kirkgate and Nos 11 to 16 Baylegate, all of which are of local interest.
