Description
The Memorial Drinking Fountain is an early 20th-century structure located on the west side of Baylegate. It features a bust of Alderman John Sawdon, who served as Mayor of Bridlington from 1861 to 1910. The bust is mounted on a stone plinth that has a battered design, a dentil cornice, and a pediment, supported by scrolled brackets. Above the basin of the drinking fountain is a lion's mask spout. The fountain has a base with two steps and is enclosed by a guard made of wrought iron standards topped with fleur de lys finials. There are various inscriptions detailing Alderman Sawdon's achievements. The fountain was unveiled on 28 March 1912. It is part of a group of buildings of local interest, which includes Nos 11 to 16 Baylegate and Nos 4 to 8 Kirgate.
