Description

The Beeches is a house dating from circa 1760, with later additions and alterations in the 1820s and 1850s. The front wall is constructed of ashlar, accentuated with raised quoins, while the right wall is red brick. The 19th-century alterations and extensions incorporate white brick. The house is two storeys and five bays, with the central bay slightly projecting and topped by a low pediment. A glazed and panelled front door is set within a Doric porch featuring a triglyph frieze and a dentilled pediment. It is flanked to either side by two-pane sashes with stone sills, each placed beneath a flat stone arch with a projecting keyblock. A first-floor band runs along the elevation. The central bay features a two-pane sash with a sill within an eared and shouldered architrave, while the bays to the left and right have two-pane sashes under flat stone arches with raised keyblocks. A moulded eaves cornice and blocking course top the front elevation, with two 20th-century flat-roofed dormers. Chimneys are located at the ends of the building and the gables have raised, coped details. A large, mid-19th century two-storey canted bay is incorporated into the left wall, extending the dining room. This has sashes with sills and glazing bars to the ground floor, and a first-floor sill band with 15-pane unequal sashes. All ground-floor sashes are placed under cambered wedge lintels. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the canted bay.
