Description
High Field Country Club is a large house dating from 1864, originally designed by H J Paull for Mr Agnas, a retired draper. It was remodelled between 1882 and 1885 by Temple Moore for Harrison Holt JP of Hull, at a cost of £3,796. The exterior is characterised by white brick to the ground floor with applied timber framing above, plain tile roofs, and white brick and ashlar stacks.
The north entrance front has an irregular 8-window facade with five gables. A two-storey, off-centre projecting porch is reached by five ashlar steps, featuring a segmental arch and a 6-light overlight. Double panel doors lead into the entrance. Above the porch is a jettied square bay window of 18-lights, with 9-lights on each side. Further windows include single 4-light cross casements. A projecting right wing features an ashlar 5-light canted bay window, above which is a large 5-light Ipswich window and a 5-light casement in the gable. To the left are nine irregular casement windows, and above, four cross casements. A projecting left wing is distinguished by an upper oriel window with a central square bay.
The west front is symmetrical, with a recessed centre featuring glazed double doors and flanking single 5-light cross casement windows. Above the centre is a blank space with a single 5-light oriel, and a 2-light dormer window is flanked by 5-light casements.
The south front is very irregular, with a projecting two-storey wing that contains a billiard room on the upper floor, identifiable by a large gabled oriel window with 24-lights. The east service front features an off-centre doorway with a projecting ornate wooden gabled porch, surmounted by a bell. Flanking the doorway are 3-light casements. Above is a 5-light cross casement window and a small dormer with a 4-light casement.
The interior retains several well-preserved reception rooms. The drawing room has full-height arcaded panelling, a large fireplace, plaster friezes, and a ceiling. The dining room features dado panelling, plaster friezes, carved doorcases, and fireplaces. An entrance hall is panelled and has carved door frames and plaster ceilings. A scroll baluster dog-leg staircase has dado panelling and an open round arched arcade on the upper floor. A service stair has turned balusters and a moulded handle. The billiard room has an open single hammerbeam roof, panelling, and a large segment arched fireplace. Various upper rooms retain fireplaces, doors, and some panelling.
