Description
These are a pair of cottages, likely dating from the 18th century, located on School Lane in Bidston, Birkenhead. The cottages were originally built of coursed rubble stone, with some brick walls, set upon a rock plinth raised in brick, and have a Welsh slate roof. The buildings form an L-shape due to later additions. Number 2 was originally a single-unit cottage, with inserted casement windows featuring concrete lintels and sills, but retains its original front door on the left-hand side. Number 4 has a projecting wing to the front, featuring a brick south wall with a doorway and a casement window above. It has sash windows in the gable, and the stone jambs of earlier windows are still visible on either side. A large projecting chimney stack is situated against the rear wall. Behind this range, aligned with it, is a taller three-storey block with inserted windows to the rear. At a right angle to this, a single-unit range has a doorway now providing access to a staircase, alongside an inserted casement window and a dormer window above.
