Description
Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely originated in the early 16th century, with the main structure being predominantly from the early 17th century, constructed in several phases. It is built from coursed and squared stone and features a heavy slate roof. The building has three storeys and a three-unit plan, with an irregular internal layout and varying levels.
The original building now serves as the rear wing. The main range, which dates from the 17th century and was built in two phases, has very irregular window placements. The earlier section consists of the two right-hand bays, which include a blocked doorway with a chamfered archway and a four-light mullioned window with a hood mould next to it. Above, there are two three-light mullioned windows with hood moulds at different levels, along with two- and three-light mullioned windows in the attic storey, all beneath a continuous hood mould. The building features an axial stack and a coped gable.
On the left side, there is a doorway in a coped gabled porch, with a three-light mullioned window with a hood mould to the left. Above this, there are two- and three-light mullioned windows beneath a continuous hood mould, and a single two-light window in the attic storey. The plain chamfered mullions and hollow chamfers on the hood moulds are consistent throughout.
The rear elevation is stuccoed, with some exposed brickwork. A parallel wing projecting to the right was added in the 19th century. The lower left-hand wing may be part of the earliest building on the site, constructed from coursed and squared rubble over a cruck frame with a slate roof. This wing features a wide doorway in the gable end that has been partially filled in, with an inserted window above, and mullioned windows on the west elevation. The cruck frame is visible internally, showcasing two collars and two purlins.
