Description
24 and 28 Westhorpe are two cottages, originally three, dating from the mid 17th century. They were altered in the late 18th century, partly raised in the mid 19th century, and further modified in the mid 20th century. The cottages are built of brick, with some remnants of timber framing visible in the left rear wall, and feature steeply pitched hipped and gabled pantile roofs. There is a large central ridge stack, along with a single gable stack and a side wall stack.
The buildings are two storeys high and have a four-window range. Number 28, on the left, has a near-central three-light casement window, flanked on the left by a blocked window and on the right by a Yorkshire sash. There is a central blocked window with single plain sashes on either side; the right sash has a segmental head. Beyond this, there are single doors, with the right door being blocked. Number 24, on the right, features a segment-headed plain sash, a close boarded door to the left, and another segment-headed plain sash to the right. The left end of number 24 has a glazing bar sash, with a two-light casement above it.
The rear of the cottages displays three panels of close studding with a mid rail and rendered nogging above. The interior of number 28 includes a winder stair and chamfered span beams, one of which has mortices for studs. At the east end, there is a stud wall with a mid rail. The ground floor contains the remains of a large fireplace, while the first floor features an early 19th-century hob grate.
