Description

This is a terrace of 11 houses located at 22 to 42 Bolton Road in Port Sunlight, built between 1895 and 1896 by William Owen. The houses are constructed of brick with stone dressings, featuring a plaster first floor with timber framing, along with some shingles and tile-hanging, all topped with tile roofs. The terrace is two storeys high and consists of 11 bays, with the three bays at each end projecting by one bay. The timber framing is present in the 3rd, 4th, and 8th bays of the first floor, while the 2nd and 10th bays have jettied gabled first floors. The 1st, 6th, 7th, and 8th bays are gabled, with shingles on the 6th and 7th bays. Decorative barge boards adorn the 1st and 2nd bays, and the inner returns feature tile-hanging with fishscale bands.

Oval plaques inscribed "L Bros. Ltd." and "A.D. 1895" are located on the 2nd and 10th bays, respectively. Most windows are small-paned casements, with 5-light bow windows in the 6th and 7th bays, and 4-light canted bays in the 2nd and 10th bays. Other bays have windows with gauged-brick flat arches and paired sashes with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are mostly three lights, with four-light windows in the 4th and 5th bays, and two-light flat-topped half-dormers in the 3rd, 8th, and 9th bays.

The entrances feature stone lintels and three-panel doors with small-paned lights. There are re-entrant porches with squat timber Tuscan columns and flat roofs, which are now blocked. The terrace has nine cross-axial stacks, and the inner returns have stacks with diagonal shafts next to the two-storey canted bay windows.
