Description

The drinking fountain, dating from 1886, is a copper-coated cast iron and terracotta structure erected to commemorate the opening of the Tranmere Abattoir. Located on New Chester Road, it is attached to the wall at the angled north-west corner of number 1. The fountain features a shaped back plate with a lion’s head spout that empties into a shell-like basin, now filled in. The basin is supported on a half-column that rises from a lower dog basin, also filled in, and served by two smaller lion’s head spouts. A relief banner decoration above the upper spout bears the inscription "THESE ABATTOIRS WERE OPENED BY WM LAIRD ESQ J.P. MAYOR OF BIRKENHEAD." A fluted, conical terracotta canopy sits above the back plate. The drinking fountain is a notable feature and reflects the importance of the Tranmere Abattoir, believed to be one of the earliest municipal slaughterhouses in the country, and its substantial international meat trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it handled over 500,000 animals per year, many imported from America and Ireland. It retains its key features and survives largely intact, demonstrating architectural and aesthetic interest through its striking design and functionality.
