Description
The Monument to the Building of the Mersey Tunnel is a Grade II listed structure located on Chester Street in Birkenhead. Erected in 1934 and designed by Herbert Rowse, this monument commemorates the construction of the Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel. It features a white ashlar base topped by a polished black granite shaft, which is tall and fluted. The shaft stands on a high base adorned with chevron and acanthus decorations in bands at both the base and the top. At the top, it is capped by a fluted glass bowl, which is supported by a ribbed cap that carries a banded sphere. The base of the monument is inscribed with the names of the engineer and architect of the tunnel, Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, as well as Herbert Rowse, along with the names of the construction teams and committees involved. Originally, the monument was designed to be positioned axially in the tunnel approach, but it has since been relocated.
