Description

The Post Office, built in 1907 by Walter Pott, is a Grade II listed building located on Argyle Street in Birkenhead. This structure is made of brick with stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. It showcases a free classical style characterized by robust and exaggerated detailing. The building stands three storeys tall and has five bays facing Argyle Street, with the central bay adorned by a pediment and full-height Ionic pilasters. The ground floor is distinguished by rusticated stonework and projecting stone bands above.

The windows are ornate, set within concave architraves, and feature segmental arches with stressed voussoirs. The upper storey windows have segmentally pedimented heads, while the second storey windows are framed in stressed moulded architraves. An egg-and-dart frieze runs above, topped by a modillion cornice and balustrading. The angled corner of the building houses a recessed entrance framed by a Gibbs surround, with a pedimented first-floor surround featuring Ionic shafts and a coat of arms above, along with the date displayed in the parapet.

To the right, there is a lower two-storeyed bay with a blocked doorway in the angled corner and a lunette in the low upper storey. The return elevation to Grange Street consists of two bays, with a single-storey seven-bay sorting office extending beyond, articulated by pilasters. The windows here are segmentally arched with stressed keyblocks. The sorting office terminates with an advanced block that features an angular pediment over the doorway.
