Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Werburgh, built between 1835 and 1837, is possibly designed by M.E. Hadfield. It is constructed from pink sandstone ashlar, which is rusticated at the basement level, and features a Welsh slate roof. The liturgical west front has a pediment supported by full-height pilasters at the corners, with a cross at the top of the pediment. There is a flat projecting porch with a doorway located in its south wall. The church has a 5-bay nave, with windows set in flat entablatures that have scrolled brackets on the north wall. There are also projecting confessional booths against the north wall. The interior was completely renewed in the late 20th century. The presbytery associated with the church is separately listed.
