Description

The remains of the Church of St Mary, built in 1821 by Thomas Rickman, are located on Priory Street in Birkenhead. The church was partly demolished in 1975. It features finely coursed and squared sandstone facing over brick. Originally, the church included a west tower, a five-bay aiseless nave, a polygonal sanctuary, and large transepts that were added between 1832 and 1835. Currently, the surviving elements include the west tower, part of the nave, and the transepts.

The west tower has two flanking porches and a section of the south wall. It is a two-stage tower with foiled lancet windows in the first stage, a clock above, and moulded arched doors with a crocketted gabled hoodmould in the south porch. The north porch features a plain moulded doorway. The second stage has 2-light belfry openings, an embattled parapet, and a recessed spire with lucarnes. The three bays of the south wall are divided by buttresses topped with pinnacles and include 2- and 3-light windows with cast-iron tracery, along with an embattled parapet. The church was constructed to serve the growing new town of Birkenhead but became redundant in 1975 when the remainder of the structure was demolished.
