Description
Italian Lodge is a two-storey building located in Birkenhead Park, constructed between 1843 and 1847 by Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson for Sir Joseph Paxton. It features an ashlar facade and a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. The lodge consists of a tower connected to a rear block by a single bay. The tower has a round arched entrance door on its side and a large projecting bay at the front topped with a high parapet. Above this bay, there is one 12-pane sash window with an entablature over it on each face, along with an open arcaded upper stage and a projecting eaves cornice. The rear range includes a squared bay and paired round-headed sash windows above. There is also a smaller service block at the back. Although the lodge is part of the original development of Birkenhead Park, it is currently in a derelict state.
