Description

The Gables is a house built in 1865 by Walter Scott for himself. It features red brick construction with blue and yellow brick detailing, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has bands of dog-tooth coursing. Designed in the Gothic style, the house has three storeys and a two-bay elevation facing Slatey Road, with the entrance located to the left and an advanced gable to the right. The entrance consists of paired part-glazed panelled doors set on steps within a porch that has a parapet, with yellow and blue brick voussoirs forming a segmental arch, complemented by stone kneelers and a key block. The shafts of the porch have foliate capitals.

On the upper floors, there are 2-pane sash windows that feature similar brick and stone heads. The main rooms of the house face Grosvenor Road, where there are three gables; the central one is advanced and includes a canted bay on the ground floor, along with a tripartite window topped with a pediment over the central light in the right-hand bay. Stone bands separate the storeys, and the upper windows are 4-pane sashes with arched brick heads, also featuring stone kneelers and keyblocks. The central gable is adorned with ornate bargeboards that include fretwork and a pendant, supported by stone corbels.

At the rear, there is a stepped lancet stair window with stained glass panels. The house has end wall stacks and an entrance gate made of brick with stepped stone copings, featuring an ogee arch that displays Scott's monogram, the date, and the house name above.
