Description

The pair of houses at 28 and 30 Devonshire Road, Birkenhead, were constructed around 1845 to 1850 by Charles Reed as part of the original planned development of Claughton, commissioned by Sir William Jackson from the early 1840s. The houses are built of stucco with a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high, each with a double-depth plan and a side entrance.

The front elevation is symmetrical. The outer bays are slightly advanced and feature a canted bay window to the ground floor and a two-light window above. The lower windows are set within architraves, with stressed quoins. The inner bay has two-light windows on each floor; a cast-iron balcony is present on the first-floor windows of the left-hand house. A central, round-arched blank panel is a prominent feature. Round-arched, hipped-roofed porches flank the central area, each containing a four-panelled door with a stressed architrave. Axial and end wall stacks are present.
