Description

A pair of houses dating from around 1850, designed by Charles Reed as part of the original development of Claughton, laid out for Sir William Jackson from the early 1840s. The houses are built with an ashlar facade and have a hipped roof covered with Welsh slate. Each house has a double-depth plan with two rooms per floor and a side entrance. The front features an outer bow window with a mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, and two-light windows above and on the upper floor in the inner bay. The design includes angle quoins, sill bands, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. A door is set within a stressed architrave on the side elevation. The building has end wall stacks. Historic maps and surveys from 1848 and 1858 illustrate the original layout of Claughton.
