Description
This is a pair of houses located at 38 and 40 Devonshire Road in Birkenhead, built in 1853 by Charles Reed. They are constructed of brick with stone dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a simple Italianate style. The buildings are two stories high and have a six-window range, with side entrances set in projecting porches that have shallow wings recessed behind. Each house has slightly advanced outer gables with bay windows that feature interlace circle decoration on the parapet, and a tripartite sash window above. The central range includes paired four-pane sash windows for each dwelling, with stressed keystones that connect to a cornice above. There are end wall and axial stacks. These houses are part of the original development in Claughton, which was laid out by Reed for Sir William Jackson during the 1840s and 1850s.
