Description

The Prenton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled on 6 August 1920. It was created by the architectural firm Briggs, Wolstenholme & Thornley of Liverpool, with sculptural work by Frank Thomas and Son of Oxton.

Constructed from Yorkshire sandstone, the memorial features slate inscription plaques. It is located within a landscaped memorial garden and is positioned on a two-stepped, coped plinth. The memorial has an octagonal three-tiered design that includes elaborate carved decoration. The lowest tier has slate panels on each face that display the memorial's inscriptions. A cornice, supported by eight cartouches with crossed palm leaves and hanging festoons, separates this tier from the second tier.

The inscriptions on the memorial are arranged anti-clockwise starting from the south face, and they read as follows:

Tablet one: IN HONOUR/ OF/ THE MEN OF/ THIS/ PARISH/ WHO SERVED/ IN THE/ GREAT/ EUROPEAN/ WAR/ 1914-1919
Tablet two: DIED FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY/ [NAMES]
Tablets three-six: SERVED ABROAD/ [NAMES]
Tablet seven: SERVED ABROAD/ [NAMES]/ SERVED AT HOME/ [NAMES]
Tablet eight: DIED FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY/ [NAMES]

The second tier of the memorial features double panels of open tracery on each face, topped by a cornice. The top tier includes bas-relief panels on each face and has a cornice above. At the very top, there is a Celtic cross with small urns at each corner, although some of these urns appear to be missing.
