Description
Royden House is a pair of houses, built around 1843-7, now subdivided into flats. The houses are constructed of ashlar stone with a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. They are designed in an Italianate style and have a square plan with a prominent central entrance.
The front facing Park Road North has eight windows, with a central bay projecting forward. An arcaded porch, raised on steps and divided by pilasters into three bays, provides access. The roofline has a balustraded parapet. Above the entrance doorway is a triangular pediment enclosing a tripartite window. The ground floor features three round-arched sash windows on each side of the central bay, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes with decorative entablatures supported by brackets. The attic storey has low nine-pane sash windows set within emphasised architraves.
The garden front has a four-window arrangement, with the central bay slightly advanced. The ground floor is finished with channelled ashlar, and features tripartite windows in the outer bays and paired round-headed sash windows in the centre, all accentuated with voussoirs. Royden House was originally built as part of the development of Birkenhead Park.
