Description
Central Lodge is a lodge located in Birkenhead Park, built around 1840 to 1850, likely designed by Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson. The building is faced with ashlar stone and features a low-pitched concrete tiled roof. It is two stories tall and has a three-window range with a double pile, two-room plan. To the left, there is a single-storey entrance block with a shouldered architrave around the doorway. The main block has a rusticated ashlar ground floor with sash windows that have round-headed upper panes. The upper storey is divided by pilasters and has similar sash windows. A balustraded parapet and fluted finials at the corners, some of which also serve as chimney stacks, complete the design. Central Lodge is part of the original development of Birkenhead Park, which was laid out by Joseph Paxton between 1844 and 1847.
