Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings to Birkenhead Park were constructed around 1843 to 1847. They feature two ashlar gate piers that have incised panels and shallow pyramidal copings. The gates are made of plain cast iron, and the railings are also cast iron with spear-head designs, mounted on a low stone base wall, and include scrolled braces on the intermediate rails. These elements are part of the original development of the park, which was designed by Joseph Paxton between 1844 and 1847. Notably, these gates are the only original ones that have survived and are embossed with the name of the founders, Coltam and Hallen from London.
