Description

A pair of houses dated circa 1840-50, likely designed by Walter Scott, situated in Birkenhead. The houses are part of the original development surrounding Birkenhead Park, laid out between 1843 and 1847 by Joseph Paxton. Constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof, the buildings exhibit a symmetrical double-depth plan, each with two units, featuring paired central gables and entrance halls in the outer bays. Recessed outer gabled ranges extend to the left. Segmentally arched doorways are framed by stone architraves with mullioned overlights and include side lights, with small stair windows positioned externally. The principal rooms within the gabled bays are characterized by three-light mullioned windows, framed by stone architraves and hood moulds, to both the ground and first floors, with smaller windows at the apex. Recessed outer gables feature four-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor, paired two-light windows above. Decorative diaper work is visible in the brickwork. Axial stacks are present, incorporating diagonal shafts.
