Description

The Grand Entrance Gateway with north and south lodges, located on Park Road North in Birkenhead, was constructed in 1847 by L. Hornblower and J. Robertson for Sir Joseph Paxton. This significant structure features a grand triple archway with segmental arches, supported by full-height coupled Ionic columns that extend across the adjoining lodges. The central gate has an attic displaying the date of construction. The cast-iron gates complement the design. Each lodge, identical in appearance, has a single 12-pane sash window on each floor facing northeast. The principal elevations of the two lodges face inward toward the drive and consist of two storeys with three bays divided by pilasters. Each lodge has a central four-panelled door set in an architrave, raised on steps, along with 12-pane sash windows. The lodges are topped with a balustraded parapet and are flanked by spearhead railings. Curved walls on either side enhance the northeast elevation.
