Description
The Gothic Lodge, gate piers, and railings serve as the entrance to Birkenhead Park. Built between 1843 and 1847 by architects Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson for Sir Joseph Paxton, the lodge is constructed from coursed and squared sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. This Gothic-style building is two storeys high, with the main range facing the street and two wings that create an L-shaped layout behind.
The central entrance leads to a symmetrical three-window main range, which includes a two-centred arched doorway set in a gabled porch. This entrance is flanked by stone mullioned windows within ashlar dressed architraves, and there are three gabled dormer windows above. The right-hand gable wall features a canted bay with a parapet, while the left gable has an added canted bay. At the rear, there are octagonal clustered stacks.
The garden is enclosed by gate piers and railings, which consist of stone gate piers adorned with incised panels and shallow pyramidal caps. The cast-iron railings include spearhead principal posts at intervals, connected by scrolled braces. This structure is an integral part of the original development of Birkenhead Park.
