Description
Leasowe Lighthouse is a disused lighthouse built in 1763, as indicated by the datestone that reads "M W G/1763" (William Gregson, Mayor of Liverpool). It was constructed for the Liverpool Docks Committee and features cavity brickwork. The lighthouse is a tapering cylinder that stands seven storeys tall. It has segmental-headed windows on the south-east and south-west sides, which are now blocked. There is a blocked rectangular opening on the north side that has a plain balcony, likely altered from its original design. The segmental-headed entrance on the south-east side has the datestone above it. This lighthouse was used for navigation alongside another lighthouse that has since been demolished and operated until 1908, but it no longer contains any machinery. Leasowe Lighthouse is a relatively early example of its kind.
