Description
The Huskisson Memorial, located on the south side of the railway and 60 meters from the road in Newton-le-Willows, was erected in 1831 to commemorate William Huskisson, the Member of Parliament for Liverpool. This memorial is designed in the style of a simplified Classical temple, featuring a single cell without a portico. The sides of the structure have anta with dentilated panels that support a plain frieze, a dentilated cornice, and a blocking course. Inside the cell is an inscribed tablet, which is a reproduction of the original tablet kept at the National Railway Museum in York. This tablet is flanked by pilasters that support an entablature decorated with wreaths. Huskisson is noted as the first person to die in a railway accident, having been struck and fatally injured by the locomotive Rocket during the opening celebrations of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830.
