Description

This is a verandah, likely dating from the early 20th century, with alterations around 1922-1925. It is attached to a row of shops, excluding numbers 487 to 495. The verandah is a six-bay colonnade constructed from cast iron and glass. It features slender cast-iron columns with decorated bases, an annular ornament midway up the shafts, and crocket caps supporting a moulded gutter with an open-work fringe and tall terminal finials. The roof is mono-pitched and glazed. On the inner side of each end column is a circular pedestal, supported by a foliated bracket, each carrying a gilded figure of a child holding a torch; the figure on the right also incorporates a 20th-century oval lamp.
